Raising awareness of the strengths of dyslexia and other neurodiversities and supporting students in Higher Education to achieve academic success.

Dyslexia is a combination of strengths and weaknesses affecting about 10 to 15% of the population. It often results in difficulties with reading and writing but has many associated strengths, such as creative thinking and problem-solving skills. I set up my company Degrees with Dyslexia a few years ago, having seen through my role as a dyslexia specialist tutor and lecturer at the University of Buckingham, how many dyslexic students went unrecognised and unsupported by educators. About 45% of students with dyslexia are not diagnosed until they reach university and often not until the third year. Dyslexia should not be a barrier to success in higher education, and with knowledge, understanding, and effective support strategies, students can achieve well and go on to share the creative thinking that is so necessary for the world today.
Be a Brilliant Dyslexic Student
Myhill, S. (2022) London: Sage Publishing
Sarah has condensed some of her knowledge and experience into an accessible, positive study guide for students with dyslexia and for those who suspect they might have it. She puts forward tried-and-tested strategies, that Sarah has seen from experience really work, to empower students to achieve their academic goals. Designed in the format of a workbook with activities and
checklists to fill in, it is packed with information on what dyslexia is and how to recognise and work to one's strengths. Areas covered include: reading, writing, memory, concentration, and time management techniques which would be helpful for all students not just those with dyslexia.
"I am passionate about raising awareness of the strengths of dyslexia and of effective study strategies that can support achievement. My book allows me to reach a wider audience and hopefully boost the confidence and grades of more students across the UK and internationally."

Sarah Myhill is a Specialist Dyslexia Tutor and Lecturer at the University of Buckingham. She is a qualified architect and lighting designer but had a career change in 2015 due to some vision problems and achieved a postgraduate qualification in Language, Literacies and Dyslexia in Higher Education from University of Birmingham. She also holds Associate Membership of the British Dyslexia Association (AMBDA FE/HE) and Association of Dyslexia Specialists in Higher Education (ADSHE).
She has brought her creativity and visual training to bear on her current role by avidly researching a wide range of evidenced-based study skill strategies and presenting them to students in a visual and dynamic way, mostly in the form of workshops, delivered 1:1 or to groups. With experience Sarah has seen what techniques really work and condensed the information into digestible strategies that are easily absorbed and put into practice to help students achieve their best academically.
